Public Health Advisory: Measles Alert for Wollongong

NSW Health has issued an urgent advisory for residents and visitors in the Wollongong area to monitor for symptoms of measles. This alert follows the notification of locally acquired cases and the identification of several exposure sites across North Wollongong, Fairy Meadow, and the Wollongong CBD. Residents who visited these areas in late March and early April are advised to be vigilant for symptoms including fever, sore eyes, a runny nose, and a cough, which are typically followed by a red, blotchy rash. Health officials urge anyone developing these symptoms to call their GP or local emergency department ahead of time to ensure they are isolated upon arrival, preventing further transmission in waiting rooms.

Transport Alert: Illawarra Line Trackwork

Passengers traveling on the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line this Sunday, 5 April, should expect significant delays and altered travel conditions due to essential network testing and maintenance. On Sunday morning, buses will replace trains between Bomaderry, Port Kembla, and Wollongong. Additional trackwork is scheduled across the Sydney Trains network throughout the day, which may impact connecting services to and from the city. Commuters are advised to allow for extra travel time and to check the latest transport apps for real-time schedule adjustments and replacement bus stop locations.

Community Safety and Strategic Planning

Wollongong City Council is currently seeking public feedback on the Draft Community Safety Plan 2026–2031. This five-year roadmap aims to enhance community wellbeing and address concerns regarding public lighting, CCTV, and the activation of public spaces. Additionally, notice is given for a Public Hearing regarding the reclassification of Council-owned land at 135 Corrimal Street and 13 Stewart Street. Residents wishing to attend the hearing or provide comment on the property review must register their interest with the Council’s Land Use Planning Team. Documents remain on public exhibition at the Burelli Street Customer Service Centre and all local branch libraries.

Coastal Maintenance and Beach Safety

Following recent heavy swells and storm activity, Council crews are active this Sunday across foreshore areas including Austinmer, Thirroul, and Port Kembla to complete debris removal and infrastructure repairs. While parks and green spaces have been mowed for weekend use, residents are reminded to exercise caution near seawall construction zones at North Wollongong. Lifeguards remain on duty at the city’s 17 patrolled beaches. Visitors are strictly advised to swim only between the red and yellow flags and to follow all safety directions from on-duty lifesavers.
