Official Notice: Final Call for NAIDOC Week Award Nominations

Wollongong City Council is issuing a final reminder to residents that nominations for the 2026 Local Government Regional NAIDOC Week Awards will close today, Friday, 20 March, at 5:00 PM. This program recognizes outstanding contributions from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members and organizations across the region. Categories currently open for nomination include Elder of the Year, Young Achiever of the Year, and Outstanding Contribution to Reconciliation. Community members are encouraged to submit their final entries through the Council’s official website or via physical forms at administrative centers before the afternoon deadline.

Health Advisory: Active Measles Alert and Symptom Monitoring

NSW Health and the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) maintain an active public health alert for the Wollongong region following confirmed measles cases. Residents who visited exposure sites between 11 March and 13 March are advised to remain vigilant. Key locations include the Wollongong Hospital Emergency Department and Medical Assessment Unit. Because it can take up to 18 days for symptoms to appear, residents should continue to monitor for signs such as high fever, runny nose, sore eyes, and a cough until the end of the month. If a red, blotchy rash develops, individuals are urged to call ahead to their GP or hospital before visiting to prevent further community transmission.

Infrastructure Update: Ray Robinson Oval Lighting Project

Essential infrastructure upgrades continue this week at Ray Robinson Oval in Towradgi. The project involves the installation of five new lighting poles to replace aging infrastructure, aimed at enhancing evening safety and accessibility for local sports clubs. Construction activity remains high this Friday, and while the oval remains largely open to the public, residents are advised to obey all on-site signage and maintain a safe distance from fenced work zones. These works are expected to continue through April as part of the Council’s commitment to improving local sporting facilities.

Planning and Development: Current Public Exhibitions

Several significant development applications and planning proposals are currently open for public feedback. Submissions are invited for the following projects:

  • Murray Park Road, Figtree (DA-2026/120): Plans for residential development are available for review until 8 April 2026.
  • Ajax Avenue, North Wollongong (DA-2026/102): Proposed commercial works are open for comment until 8 April 2026.
  • Soudan Street, Thirroul (DA-2026/112): Residential proposals are currently on exhibition through early April.
  • Stewart Street East Carpark: Feedback is being sought regarding the reclassification of Council land for future use.

Maintenance Schedule: Road and Stormwater Works

Council maintenance crews are active across several suburbs this Friday as part of the weekly works schedule. Specific projects impacting local traffic include flood and stormwater management works on Railway Avenue in Austinmer and Cabbage Tree Lane in Fairy Meadow. Roadworks are also progressing on West Dapto Road and Wyllie Road in Dapto to support new urban growth areas. Commuters should expect minor delays and temporary traffic control measures in these locations.
