Morning Train Disruptions and Bus Replacements

Commuters and weekend travelers on the South Coast Line should prepare for service adjustments this morning, Sunday, 1 February 2026. Transport for NSW has confirmed that from 2:30 am until 9:50 am, buses will replace trains between Bomaderry and Wollongong. This trackwork is part of ongoing maintenance to ensure the safety and reliability of the rail network. Passengers traveling from stations such as Kiama, Shellharbour, and Dapto toward Wollongong will need to utilize the replacement bus services, which may add significant time to their journey.

While buses are operating on the southern end of the line, trains will continue to run between Port Kembla, Wollongong, and Bondi Junction; however, these services will operate on a changed timetable. Specifically, the 2:39 am service from Kiama to Bondi Junction is scheduled to depart up to 19 minutes earlier than usual between Kiama and Coniston before resuming its normal schedule from Wollongong. Travelers are encouraged to check digital real-time apps before heading to the platform to avoid missing their connection.

Roadworks and Local Traffic Conditions

On the roads, a new phase of utility work is scheduled to begin today at the intersection of Springhill Road and Port Kembla Road. This work is expected to impact traffic flow in the industrial heart of the city, with lane closures and reduced speed limits in place throughout the day. Motorists traveling through the Port Kembla area should expect minor delays and are advised to keep a close eye on updated signage as contractors move equipment into place.

In the Wollongong CBD, the vehicle closure on Crown Lane remains in effect. This closure, which supports the city’s outdoor dining trial and pedestrian safety initiatives, is now a long-term fixture and is currently slated to continue through late February. Drivers are reminded that vehicle access is restricted in this area, and alternative routes via Rawson Street or Crown Street should be used for navigating the city center.

Travel Advice for Major Events

For those planning to travel north into Sydney for major events such as UFC 325 at Qudos Bank Arena, be aware that while the South Coast Line is largely operational north of Wollongong after 9:50 am, the wider Sydney network is experiencing several trackwork projects. If you are heading to Sydney Olympic Park, allow extra travel time as the M1 Metro and certain T1 North Shore services are also undergoing maintenance today. Public transport remains the recommended option for reaching major stadiums, but checking the trip planner is essential for coordinating between the South Coast Line and connecting Sydney services.

Sunday Commuter Tips

  • Plan for at least 30 minutes of additional travel time if using the Bomaderry to Wollongong replacement buses this morning.
  • Exercise caution on the M1 Princes Motorway near the Mount Ousley interchange, where heavy vehicle movements and ongoing construction activity continue to be a factor.
  • Check the latest updates on the Live Traffic NSW website or mobile app for any sudden incidents or emergency closures throughout the day.
