Significant Rail Disruptions and M1 Infrastructure Updates for Monday, 6 April 2026

Wollongong commuters are facing a busy start to the week as major rail maintenance wraps up and new traffic configurations take effect on the M1 Princes Motorway. With several localized roadworks also active across the suburbs, residents are advised to allow extra travel time this morning.

South Coast Line: Final Day of Major Trackwork

Public transport users on the South Coast Line should prepare for continued disruptions today. As part of a scheduled maintenance block running from 3 April through to today, Monday, 6 April 2026, essential track maintenance is being carried out at Helensburgh, alongside drainage upgrades at Scarborough. Consequently, buses are replacing trains between Waterfall and Thirroul for much of the day. Commuters heading toward Sydney should check the latest trip planners as journey times will be significantly extended due to the bus transition. Regular train services are expected to resume tomorrow morning.

Mount Ousley Interchange: New Safety Ramp Now Open

Motorists using the M1 Princes Motorway should be aware of significant changes at the base of Mount Ousley. As of late last week, the first of two new heavy vehicle safety ramps has officially opened to traffic. This new ramp is located approximately 330 meters north of the old southern-most safety ramp, which has now been permanently closed to facilitate the next stage of the interchange construction. While no full night closures of the M1 are scheduled for tonight, drivers should be aware that a new block of night works (7:00 PM to 6:00 AM) is set to begin tomorrow, Tuesday, 7 April.

Local Roadworks and Traffic Delays

Wollongong City Council has confirmed several active work sites for the week beginning Monday, 30 March, which remain in effect today. Key areas to watch include:

  • Fairy Meadow: Roadworks are active on the Princes Highway and Fairy Avenue, which may cause localized congestion during peak hours.
  • Figtree: Maintenance on Whelan Avenue is expected to impact local traffic flow.
  • Corrimal: Work continues on Eager Street, with minor detours in place.
  • Picton Road: Survey investigations are ongoing between the M1 interchange and Wilton. While work is primarily off-road, motorists may notice increased activity and a 60km/h speed limit through active survey zones.

Advice for Commuters

If you are traveling between the Illawarra and Sydney today, the combination of rail replacements and M1 construction means your trip could take 20 to 30 minutes longer than usual. For those driving, please remain vigilant near the new Mount Ousley safety ramp as heavy vehicles adjust to the new entry point. Stick to the posted speed limits through construction zones in Fairy Meadow and Figtree to ensure the safety of road crews.
