Public Infrastructure and Roadwork Alerts

Wollongong City Council advises residents of several significant roadwork projects and infrastructure upgrades active today, Friday, 30 January 2026. The most notable impact remains the full road closure at the intersection of Pine Gully Road and Cootamundra Boulevard. This closure is part of the Stage 2 Corridor upgrade, which includes the construction of a new roundabout and drainage improvements. Detours are in place, and the site is expected to remain closed through April 2026.

Additional maintenance works are scheduled in the following locations:

  • Brownsville: Roadworks ongoing at Windsor Crescent.
  • Coledale: Essential road repairs on Cater Street.
  • Fairy Meadow: Active work sites on Helen Brae Avenue, Garratt Avenue, and Balfour Road.
  • Figtree: Upgrades to the Figtree Oval Carpark and footpath renewals on Preston Street and Garden Avenue.
  • Wollongong CBD: Footpath construction on Denison Street and community building maintenance on Montague Street.

Beach Safety and Aquatic Services

Today marks the final day of the Peak Season patrol schedule for Wollongong’s beaches. Lifeguards will be on duty at patrolled locations from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. Starting tomorrow, Saturday, 31 January, the High Season schedule will commence, maintaining similar hours but with adjusted staffing levels.

A shark safety alert remains in effect for all Illawarra coastal waters following a series of recent incidents across the state. The NSW Government has deployed expanded drone surveillance and real-time tracking stations to monitor activity, particularly near estuaries. Swimmers are urged to stay between the red and yellow flags and avoid the water during dawn, dusk, or after heavy rainfall when shark activity is known to increase.

In Helensburgh, the Memorial Pool remains closed to the public. While refurbishments were originally slated for completion this month, a delay in tile supplies has pushed the reopening date to mid-to-late February 2026. Residents are encouraged to use alternative facilities at Bulli or Western Suburbs during this time.

Planning and Public Service Notices

Council is currently seeking community feedback on several Development Applications (DAs). Key proposals on exhibition include DA-2026/15 for Bellambi Lane, Bellambi, and DA-2026/2 for Walker Street, Helensburgh. Submissions for these proposals will remain open until 18 February 2026.

Residents are also advised to be cautious of king tides forecast to impact low-lying coastal areas and estuaries today. Motorists should avoid parking in areas prone to minor tidal flooding, such as those adjacent to the Lake Illawarra foreshore. Finally, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) notes that its online portal will resume full service early this morning following scheduled maintenance completed at 1:30 am.
