Community Meetings and Public Engagement

Wollongong City Council is facilitating several community engagement opportunities today, Wednesday, 4 March 2026. Residents in the central district are invited to attend the Neighbourhood Forum 5, which provides a platform for locals to discuss planning, environment, and community safety issues directly with council representatives. Additionally, an online presentation regarding the Helensburgh Community Centre and Library project is scheduled for today, allowing residents to view the latest design concepts and provide feedback on the future-ready community hub.

2026 Seniors Festival Activities

The NSW Seniors Festival, themed 'Live Life in Colour,' continues today across the Illawarra. Key events for Wednesday include the Garden Discovery Buggy Tour at the Wollongong Botanic Garden, specifically designed for those with limited mobility to explore the grounds. A Nature Immersion Program is also active today, encouraging older residents to connect with local biodiversity. Council reminds eligible community members that free tickets for the upcoming Lord Mayor’s Afternoon Tea Dance are currently available for collection at Council administrative centres while supplies last.

Public Health Advisories

NSW Health maintains an active Measles Alert for the Illawarra Shoalhaven district. Residents who have visited high-traffic public areas are urged to monitor for symptoms, including fever, sore eyes, a cough, and a blotchy red rash. Authorities recommend checking vaccination status, as the monitoring period for recent exposure sites remains active. Furthermore, a Buruli Ulcer warning remains in place for south-east New South Wales. To prevent infection, residents should use mosquito repellent and wear protective clothing during dawn and dusk, particularly when gardening or near stagnant water.

Traffic and Infrastructure Updates

Motorists are advised of significant traffic control measures around the Wollongong Education Precinct. To manage congestion during the first week of the university semester, diversions are in place on weekdays between 7:45 am and 9:15 am. Southbound traffic exiting the M1 at University Avenue will be diverted for U-turns to manage flow into UOW and TAFE campuses. Essential road maintenance is also active at the following locations:

  • Fairy Meadow: Continued roadworks on Dymock Street and Helen Brae Avenue.
  • Berkeley: Maintenance crews active on Salisbury Street.
  • Figtree: Footpath and shared path construction continues on Garden Avenue.
  • Dapto: Ongoing infrastructure upgrades on Burke Road.

Planning and Sustainability Notices

The public exhibition period for the Corrimal Cokeworks urban renewal project (DA-2023/840) remains open. Formal submissions regarding this major development must be received by 18 March 2026. Residents are also encouraged to register for the second round of the Community Renewable Program, which opened this week, to access bulk-buy solar and battery packages.
