Official Public Notices for Friday, 6 March 2026

Wollongong City Council and NSW state authorities have issued several critical updates regarding infrastructure, public health, and urban planning. Residents and commuters are advised to review the following notices to understand impacts on local services and community projects throughout the Illawarra region.

Critical Infrastructure: Windang Bridge Erosion Control

A major remedial operation is currently underway to protect the structural stability of Windang Bridge. Following reports of significant erosion along the waterfront and the undermining of the bridge structure, workers have begun depositing approximately 3,000 tonnes of rock to reinforce the crossing. This urgent project aims to safeguard the 30,000 vehicles that use the link between Wollongong and Shellharbour daily. While the bridge remains open, motorists should remain alert to heavy machinery and work crews in the vicinity of the lake entrance.

Roadworks and Maintenance Schedule

Council maintenance crews are active across the local government area today as part of the scheduled works for the first week of March. Notable impacts include:

  • Berkeley: Roadworks on Salisbury Street.
  • Dapto: Maintenance and pavement repairs on Burke Road.
  • Fairy Meadow: Active roadwork sites on Dymock Street and Helen Brae Avenue.
  • Figtree: Upgrades to footpaths and shared paths along Garden Avenue.
  • Wollongong CBD: Footpath repairs on Rosemont Street and building maintenance at Montague Street facilities.
  • Coledale: Flood and stormwater infrastructure works at Sharkeys Beach.

Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time in these areas and follow all temporary traffic control signals.

Public Exhibition: Strategic Review of Council Landholdings

Council has officially opened the public exhibition period for a Planning Proposal involving a strategic review of Council-owned lands. This review focuses on properties currently zoned as R2 Low Density or R3 Medium Density Residential across the Wollongong Local Government Area. The exhibition will remain open until 31 March 2026. Residents can view the relevant documents at all Council libraries or the Customer Service Centre on Burelli Street. Community members are invited to provide feedback to help shape future land use and reclassification decisions.

Health Advisory: Illegal Tobacco Enforcement

NSW Health has confirmed the immediate 90-day closure of multiple tobacco retailers within the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District. These enforcement actions follow the introduction of strengthened tobacco and vaping control laws. Inspectors have seized significant quantities of illicit cigarettes and vapes as part of a statewide crackdown. Authorities remind the public that operating a tobacco business without a valid license or selling illicit products carries severe penalties, including potential prosecution and long-term closure orders.

North Wollongong Sea Wall Update

Progress continues on the North Wollongong Sea Wall extension project. While major construction is slated to begin on 22 March, Council is currently finalizing arrangements for a temporary pop-up cafe to serve the community following the upcoming closure of the North Beach Cafe and Diggies. Residents should note that site preparations may result in minor pedestrian diversions around the Emma McKeon Promenade over the coming days.
