Public Health Alert: Measles Cases Confirmed in Wollongong
NSW Health and the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) have issued an urgent health advisory following confirmed cases of measles within the local community. Cases have been linked to exposure sites in Fairy Meadow, North Wollongong, Gwynneville, Wollongong CBD, and Warrawong. Residents who visited these areas in late March are urged to monitor for symptoms, which typically include fever, sore eyes, and a cough, followed by a red blotchy rash. As measles is highly contagious, anyone experiencing symptoms is advised to contact their GP in advance before visiting the clinic to prevent further transmission. Vaccination remains the most effective defense, and the public is encouraged to ensure their immunisation status is up to date.
New Public Infrastructure: Kerbside EV Charging Now Active
Wollongong City Council has officially expanded its sustainable transport network with the activation of new public kerbside electric vehicle (EV) chargers. As of early April, charging stations mounted on existing utility poles are available for community use in Wollongong, Thirroul, and Austinmer. These chargers are powered by 100 per cent renewable energy. Drivers are required to provide their own Type 2 charging cables and utilize the dedicated mobile application for payment and session management. This initiative supports the city’s goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Road Maintenance and Post-Storm Clean-up
Maintenance crews are currently conducting road resurfacing and pavement stabilization as part of the weekly works program. Localised traffic control is in place at Kaloona Avenue and surrounding precincts. Additionally, following recent weather events, Council teams are prioritising the clean-up of debris and fallen branches across public parks and coastal paths. Residents are thanked for their patience as heavy machinery may be operating in residential areas to restore access and safety.
Community Engagement: Safety and Planning Proposals
The City of Wollongong is seeking community feedback on several key initiatives active this Friday:
- Draft Community Safety Plan 2026-2031: Residents are invited to review the draft plan, which focuses on improving lighting, CCTV coverage, and graffiti removal in high-traffic areas such as the CBD and transport hubs.
- Public Hearing Registration: Registration is now open for a public hearing regarding the proposed reclassification of Council land at 135 Corrimal Street and 13 Stewart Street. Interested parties must register by mid-April to participate.
Holiday Service Notice: Good Friday
As today is Good Friday, certain Council facilities including libraries and administrative offices are closed. Public holiday waste collection schedules may be in effect; residents are advised to leave bins out as usual unless otherwise notified. Beach patrols remain active at patrolled locations, and visitors are urged to swim only between the red and yellow flags during the busy Easter break.
