Monday Morning Traffic Overview

Wollongong commuters can expect a relatively steady start to the work week this Monday, March 16, 2026. While no major accidents have been reported on the M1 Princes Motorway early this morning, significant infrastructure activity continues to shape travel times across the Illawarra. Motorists are encouraged to allow an extra 5 to 10 minutes for their journey, particularly when navigating the Mount Ousley precinct and suburban secondary roads.

Major Arteries and Mt Ousley Interchange

The M1 Princes Motorway remains the primary focus for regional traffic management. As the Mount Ousley Interchange project enters its latest construction phase this March, several permanent and temporary changes are in effect:

  • Speed Restrictions: A reduced speed limit of 60km/h remains strictly enforced through the base of Mount Ousley. Construction crews are active near the University of Wollongong, and heavy vehicle movements between work sites are expected throughout the day.
  • Commuter Parking: Commuters are reminded that the old car park accessed via Mount Ousley Road is now permanently closed. Excavation for the new road bridges over the M1 is underway in this area. A replacement car park is currently under construction on the western side of the interchange.
  • Night Work: While the motorway is open for the Monday morning peak, scheduled night work is occurring between 7pm and 6am, Mondays to Thursdays. This involves utility relocation and drainage installation, though no full road closures are scheduled for tonight.

Public Transport and Rail Updates

Following a weekend of scheduled maintenance, the South Coast Line is operating on a normal weekday schedule today. The rail replacement buses that operated between Bomaderry and Wollongong on Sunday have concluded, and full train services have resumed. Commuters heading toward Sydney should experience a standard timetable, though it is always recommended to check real-time apps for minor rolling delays.

Suburban Roadworks and Local Impacts

Wollongong City Council has several active maintenance projects that may cause localized 'stop/slow' traffic control. Key areas of activity today include:

  • Fairy Meadow: Road rebuilding and resurfacing continue on Dymock Street and Helen Brae Avenue.
  • Dapto: Significant pavement works are occurring on Burke Road.
  • Keiraville: Localized delays are expected on Pooraka Avenue and Eastern Street due to road renewals.
  • Berkeley: Maintenance is scheduled for Salisbury Street.

University of Wollongong Access

Students and staff heading to the UOW Wollongong Campus should note that construction of the new Northern Entrance is impacting the P5 carpark. Fencing is currently in place around sections of the lot near Djeera Way. Pedestrians and cyclists arriving from North Wollongong Station are advised to follow existing detours via Foleys Lane to access the campus footbridge safely.
