Commuter Alert: Heavy Traffic and Roadworks for Tuesday, 7 April 2026

Wollongong commuters and holidaymakers are advised to prepare for significant changes to road conditions today, Tuesday, 7 April 2026. As the first day of the autumn school holiday period coincides with the post-Easter return to work, traffic volumes on major arteries, particularly the M1 Princes Motorway, are expected to be significantly higher than usual.

Major Project Update: Mount Ousley Interchange

The $405 million Mount Ousley Interchange project is currently in a high-activity phase. Following the successful installation of 16 pre-cast concrete girders last week, construction remains ongoing. Motorists should be aware of the following conditions:

  • New Heavy Vehicle Ramp: The first of two new heavy vehicle safety ramps, located 330 metres north of the old southern ramp, is now operational. Heavy vehicle drivers should look for updated signage and line markings.
  • Speed Restrictions: Permanent 80km/h speed zones remain in place through the construction corridor between Bulli Tops and Gwynneville. Expect intermittent lane narrows as crews continue work on the bridge decks and shared paths.
  • Ongoing Site Work: Day works are scheduled to continue throughout the week. While no full road closures are planned for this Tuesday daytime, motorists should anticipate heavy machinery movements near the University Avenue and M1 junction.

Wollongong Education Precinct Diversions

Despite the start of school holidays for primary and secondary students, temporary traffic management remains active around the University of Wollongong (UOW) and TAFE NSW. Between 7:45 am and 9:15 am this morning, the following diversions apply:

  • Motorists exiting the M1 Motorway at University Avenue will be diverted left to perform a U-turn at the eastern roundabout.
  • University-bound traffic will be detoured via the western access route using Murphys Avenue and Robsons Road.
  • Drivers wishing to access the M1 northbound from Keiraville or Gwynneville are encouraged to use the Robsons Road entry at West Wollongong to avoid peak-period congestion.

Regional Road Conditions and Public Transport

On the broader network, Picton Road remains a high-traffic zone with ongoing safety upgrade investigations. Commuters travelling toward the Hume Motorway should allow an additional 10 to 15 minutes for their journey due to increased holiday freight and passenger vehicle movements. In the city, local road resurfacing projects are scheduled for Eager Street in Corrimal and along sections of the Princes Highway in Fairy Meadow; however, these are not expected to cause major arterial delays.

For those using public transport, the South Coast Line is operating on a standard weekday holiday schedule. While there are no major trackwork closures reported for today, commuters should be aware of minor timetable adjustments introduced earlier this month. Passengers travelling toward the Sydney CBD are advised to check for platform changes at Central and Redfern. Bus services, including the free Wollongong Shuttle, will continue to operate, though they may experience slight delays due to increased surface traffic around the CBD and foreshore areas.
