Morning Harmonies and Civic Pride

Celebrate the start of Australia Day on Monday, 26 January 2026, with a special community performance in the heart of the CBD. The Wollongong Town Hall will host a local Citizenship Ceremony starting at 9:55 AM. A highlight of the morning will be a live performance by the Wollongong Harmony Chorus. Residents are invited to gather and welcome the city's newest citizens in a ceremony that concludes at approximately 10:30 AM. This is a great opportunity to enjoy local choral talent in one of Wollongong's most iconic venues.

Evening Festivities at Wollongong Harbour

Wollongong City Council’s main community celebration kicks off at 5:00 PM at Wollongong Harbour, Belmore Basin, and Osborne Park. This alcohol-free, family-friendly event focuses on culture and community connection. The evening will begin with a formal Welcome to Country by Uncle Richard Davis, followed by a vibrant program including:

• Cultural Art Workshops: Hands-on activities for all ages to learn and create.
• Roving Entertainment: Street performers and musicians will circulate through the parklands.
• Family Fun: Jumping castles and interactive kids' zones will be available throughout the afternoon.

The night will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display at 9:00 PM over the harbour. Council has identified Flagstaff Hill as a secondary firing point if weather conditions require, ensuring the community has the best chance to see the display.

Lakeside Markets and Breakfast

For those looking for a morning market atmosphere, the annual Australia Day Breakfast by the Lake takes place at Reddall Reserve from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. While hosted by our neighbors at Shellharbour City Council, this event is a local favorite for Wollongong residents. It features local market stalls, live music, and unique activities such as sand modelling competitions and parkour games for teens. It is a perfect spot for early birds to enjoy a BBQ breakfast while browsing local crafts.

Practical Information for Residents

Please note that several road closures will be in place around the Cliff Road and harbour precinct to facilitate the evening celebrations. Wollongong Art Gallery will be closed for the public holiday. Attendees are encouraged to use public transport and bring a picnic blanket to secure a spot at Osborne Park well before the 9:00 PM fireworks.
