Good Friday Holiday Traffic: Heavy Southbound Delays and New Mount Ousley Safety Ramp Now Open

Holiday Traffic Surge for Good Friday
Commuters and holiday-makers in the Illawarra should prepare for significant congestion today, Friday, 3 April 2026. As the Easter long weekend begins, heavy traffic volumes are expected across all major arteries, particularly for those heading south from Sydney. Transport for NSW has identified the M1 Princes Motorway and the Princes Highway as primary holiday pinch points. Southbound delays are anticipated to peak between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM as thousands of motorists depart for the South Coast.
Mount Ousley Interchange Update
In a major milestone for the region’s infrastructure, the first of two new heavy vehicle safety ramps on the Mount Ousley Interchange project has officially opened as of yesterday. Located approximately 330 metres north of the previous southern-most ramp, this 220-metre-long facility is now operational for trucks and buses. While major construction work on the $405 million project is typically paused for the public holiday to minimize disruptions, motorists are advised that the existing southern-most safety ramp is now permanently closed to facilitate ongoing bridge work. A reduced speed limit remains in place through the construction zone, and drivers are urged to exercise caution when merging near the University of Wollongong access roads.
Public Transport Service Changes
Due to the Good Friday public holiday, public transport across Wollongong will operate on a modified schedule. Commuters should note the following:
- Trains: South Coast Line services will run according to a Sunday/Public Holiday timetable. Passengers heading to Sydney for the Royal Easter Show should plan ahead as high demand is expected.
- Buses: Local operators, including Premier Illawarra and Dion’s Bus Service, will also be running Sunday timetables. The free Gong Shuttle (55A and 55C) will maintain a public holiday frequency.
Police Operation Easter and Double Demerits
Operation Easter 2026 is currently in full effect. NSW Police have increased their presence on the roads to monitor speeding, fatigue, and mobile phone usage. Double demerit points are in force from now until midnight Monday, 6 April. With traffic numbers swelling, authorities are imploring drivers to "pack their patience" and allow for extra travel time. If you are heading further south toward Nowra or Ulladulla, be prepared for additional holiday bottlenecks through major townships.
