Morning Peak Diversions at Wollongong Education Precinct

Commuters heading toward the University of Wollongong (UOW) and TAFE NSW Wollongong campus this Friday, 27 March 2026, should prepare for significant traffic diversions. Transport for NSW has confirmed that temporary traffic management will be active between 7:45 am and 9:15 am to handle the high volume of students and staff. Motorists exiting the M1 Princes Motorway at University Avenue will be diverted left to perform a U-turn at the eastern roundabout. From there, university-bound traffic will be detoured via Murphys Avenue and Robsons Road.

Northbound motorists on the M1 using the Gwynneville exit should also expect a detour to the Northfields Avenue roundabout to access Irvine Street. Authorities recommend allowing an additional 15 to 20 minutes for travel during this window or utilizing North Wollongong station and the free shuttle bus services to bypass the local road congestion.

Mount Ousley Interchange Construction Update

Ongoing major works for the Mount Ousley interchange continue to impact the M1 Princes Motorway. While the scheduled night work is set to conclude at 6:00 am on Friday morning, motorists should remain alert for changed lane conditions, temporary barriers, and reduced speed limits through the work zone. Standard construction hours will resume from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, involving heavy vehicle movements and utility installations. Please note that while full road closures are not scheduled for the daytime on Friday, significant night-time closures are expected to resume this coming Sunday evening.

Local Roadworks and Council Projects

Wollongong City Council has several active roadwork and maintenance sites across the region for the remainder of this week. Motorists should anticipate localized delays or stop-slow traffic control at the following locations:

  • Berkeley: Roadworks are continuing on Bedford Street.
  • Dapto: Maintenance crews are active on Burke Road.
  • Fairy Meadow: Expect delays on Fairy Avenue due to ongoing road improvements.
  • Figtree: Work continues on Garden Avenue and Whelan Avenue.
  • Mount Keira: Road surfacing and repairs are scheduled for Kaloona Avenue.

Public Transport and Weekend Outlook

Public transport services across the Illawarra and South Coast lines are currently running to a standard Friday timetable. However, commuters planning travel for the upcoming weekend should be aware that major trackwork is scheduled for Saturday, 28 March, and Sunday, 29 March. During this time, buses will replace trains on several sections of the line, including services between Port Kembla and Wollongong. It is advised to complete essential rail travel this Friday to avoid the weekend bus replacements.
