A Transitional Friday for Wollongong

As we head into Friday, 3 April 2026, Wollongong residents can expect a day of transition. Following the intense low-pressure system that brought damaging winds to the Illawarra earlier this week, the atmosphere is beginning to stabilize, though lingering moisture and coastal hazards remain the primary concern. For those heading out today, the general advice is to keep a light jacket and an umbrella handy, as the region remains under the influence of a damp coastal flow.

Morning: A Humid Start with Persistent Cloud

The morning hours in Wollongong are expected to be characterized by high humidity, reaching up to 93% in the early hours. Temperatures will start at a mild 17°C, climbing steadily toward 21°C by mid-morning. While early commuters might see a few breaks in the cloud cover, the sky is predicted to remain mostly cloudy. Wind speeds will be moderate, averaging around 24 km/h (15 mph) from the south-east, making the air feel slightly cooler than the actual thermometer reading.

Afternoon: Peak Temperatures and Increasing Cover

By midday and into the early afternoon, temperatures will reach their daily maximum, ranging between 22°C and 24°C. Despite the comfortable temperature range, solar radiation will be moderated by increasing cloud thickness. The UV index is forecast to reach a moderate level of 3, so sun protection is still recommended for extended outdoor activities. By mid-afternoon, the chance of precipitation begins to rise as the cloud deck lowers, signaling the approach of a weak trough moving along the coast.

Evening and Night: Showers Likely

The main weather event for Friday occurs late in the day. Meteorologists predict a 40% to 45% chance of light rain and scattered showers moving through the city during the evening and overnight periods. While significant rainfall totals are not expected—with estimates sitting around 1mm—the timing may impact evening plans and Friday night sports. Temperatures will settle back down to a minimum of 17°C overnight, maintained by the insulating cloud cover.

Marine Hazards and Coastal Safety

While conditions on land have improved since the 110 km/h gusts recorded last week, the maritime environment remains dangerous. A hazardous surf warning continues for the Illawarra coast. Large and powerful waves, driven by the departing low-pressure system, are expected to create treacherous conditions for rock fishing, boating, and swimming. Marine Area Command and the Bureau of Meteorology urge the community to stay clear of rock platforms and reconsider any water-based activities as swells remain unpredictable through to the weekend.
