Community-Led Governance Continues with Key Local Sessions

Wollongong’s commitment to community-led governance continues today, Wednesday, 8 April 2026, with two significant Neighborhood Forum meetings scheduled for the northern and southern reaches of the local government area. Residents of the Helensburgh and Dapto regions will gather this evening to discuss pressing local issues, providing a direct line of communication between the community and the Wollongong City Council.

Neighborhood Forum 1, representing the Helensburgh area, and Neighborhood Forum 8, representing the Dapto area, serve as vital platforms for residents to voice concerns regarding urban development, infrastructure maintenance, and local environmental protections. Today's sessions come at a time of increased activity for the council, as several major projects and policy decisions have recently been finalized or put forward for public exhibition. These forums allow for grassroots discussion on topics ranging from local road safety to the management of neighborhood parks and facilities.

Council Secures Funding for Urban Greening

While the forums allow for localized discussion, the broader council agenda remains focused on the recently announced "Greening Our City" initiative. Lord Mayor Tania Brown confirmed this week that the council has successfully secured $480,000 in funding through the NSW Government. This grant is earmarked for the planting of more than 1,500 trees across the region, a move designed to increase the city’s canopy cover from 27 percent to 35 percent. Today's forum participants in the Dapto area may find particular interest in this rollout, as southern suburbs including Berkeley, Warrawong, and Port Kembla have been identified as priority areas for these cooling initiatives due to their higher exposure to heat and lower existing canopy.

Ongoing Planning and Policy Developments

The political landscape in Wollongong has also been shaped by ongoing discussions regarding social housing and urban density. Following recent council endorsements for rezoning submissions at Bellambi Point, community feedback remains a high priority for the administration. Although today’s forums are independent of the formal Ordinary Council Meeting cycle, the insights gathered are frequently utilized by councilors to inform their votes on such major planning proposals.

Looking ahead, residents are reminded that the next Ordinary Meeting of Council has been rescheduled. To accommodate the Anzac Day public holiday, the meeting will now take place on Monday, 20 April 2026. This upcoming session is expected to address several development applications currently on public exhibition, including projects on the Princes Highway in Corrimal and residential works in Thirroul. Citizens are encouraged to participate in today's forums to ensure their voices are heard before these formal decisions are reached.
