Major Night Closures on M1 and Picton Road

Commuters and freight operators should prepare for significant disruptions tonight, Wednesday, 25 March 2026. Transport for NSW has confirmed full night closures on two of the region's busiest arteries to facilitate ongoing work on the Mount Ousley Interchange project and essential routine maintenance. These closures are critical for vegetation maintenance, signage installation, and bridge construction activities.

  • M1 Princes Motorway: The motorway will be closed in both directions between Bulli Tops and Memorial Drive from 8:00 pm tonight until 4:00 am Thursday morning.
  • Picton Road: A full closure will be in place between the M1 interchange and Almond Street at Wilton. Eastbound lanes on Picton Road will begin closing earlier at 7:30 pm to ensure the motorway is clear by the 8:00 pm start time.

Detours for light vehicles will be in place via Bulli Pass and Memorial Drive, which is expected to add approximately 15 minutes to travel times. Motorists heading toward the Hume Motorway should allow an extra 40 minutes for travel via Appin Road. Heavy vehicles exceeding 19 metres in length or 50.5 tonnes in weight are restricted from using Bulli Pass and are advised to delay their journeys; however, a heavy vehicle escort window will be available at 12:00 am midnight for those already in transit.

Wollongong Education Precinct Peak Diversions

Traffic management remains in place around the University of Wollongong and TAFE NSW to handle the morning peak. Between 7:45 am and 9:15 am today, the following changes apply:

  • Southbound motorists exiting the M1 at University Avenue will be diverted left to make a U-turn at the eastern roundabout.
  • University-bound traffic will then be detoured via Murphys Avenue and Robsons Road.
  • Drivers seeking to enter the M1 northbound from Keiraville or Gwynneville are urged to use the Robsons Road entry at West Wollongong to avoid delays at the main university gates.

Local Roadworks and Public Transport

Wollongong City Council has scheduled several local road improvements today. Motorists should anticipate "stop/slow" traffic control and minor delays in the following areas:

  • Berkeley: Roadworks on Bedford Street.
  • Dapto: Maintenance along Burke Road.
  • Fairy Meadow: Resurfacing work on Fairy Avenue.
  • Mount Keira: Localized delays on Kaloona Avenue.

While the South Coast rail line is operating on a standard weekday timetable during daylight hours, evening commuters should be aware that some bus companies may adjust routes near the M1 closure points after 8:00 pm. Always check the latest service alerts before starting your journey home tonight.
