M1 Princes Motorway: Full Night Closure Scheduled

Commuters and long-haul drivers are advised of a significant disruption on the M1 Princes Motorway starting tonight. As part of the ongoing Mount Ousley Interchange project, a full road closure will be in effect between Bulli Pass and Memorial Drive from 8:00 pm tonight, Monday, 30 March, until 4:00 am Tuesday. This closure is critical for the installation of temporary street lighting, drainage works, and the relocation of safety barriers as the project moves into its next major phase.

In addition to the motorway closure, Picton Road will be closed between the M1 Princes Motorway and Almond Street at Wilton during the same eight-hour window. Motorists are urged to plan ahead and follow signposted detours via Bulli Pass or the Princes Highway. Heavy vehicle drivers should take particular note, as height and weight restrictions on alternative routes may apply.

Daytime Commute: Speed Restrictions and Construction Zones

During the standard Monday morning and afternoon peak, the commute through the Mount Ousley corridor remains subject to heavy construction activity. The speed limit through the interchange project zone is strictly enforced at 60 km/h. Motorists may encounter further reductions to 40 km/h in areas where crews are working immediately adjacent to live traffic lanes. Drivers should expect increased truck movements near the University of Wollongong (UOW) northern entrance, where work on the new Djeera Way access point is progressing rapidly.

Wollongong Council Local Roadworks

Several local infrastructure projects are active today, which may cause minor delays and localized parking restrictions. Traffic control, including "stop/slow" arrangements, will be in place at the following locations:

  • Berkeley: Pavement renewals and maintenance continue on Bedford Street and Salisbury Street.
  • Dapto: Maintenance crews are active on Burke Road.
  • Fairy Meadow: Significant roadwork is underway on Fairy Avenue and Dymock Street.
  • Figtree: Footpath and shared path upgrades are impacting Garden Avenue and Whelan Avenue.
  • Mount Keira: Localized delays are expected on Kaloona Avenue.
  • Wollongong CBD: Essential road maintenance is scheduled for Bank Street.

Public Transport: Rail Services Resumed

Following a weekend of major trackwork on the South Coast Line, regular train services have resumed for the Monday commute. Passengers traveling between Wollongong and Sydney can expect a standard timetable; however, commuters are encouraged to check for any residual delays that may linger following the completion of the weekend’s maintenance. The "Gong Shuttle" (Route 55A/55C) continues to operate its regular loop and remains the recommended option for navigating CBD traffic and reaching the university precinct.

Commuter Advice

For those traveling tonight, please ensure you have exited the M1 or Picton Road corridors prior to the 8:00 pm shutdown to avoid significant detour-related delays. Residents near Mount Ousley may also experience increased noise and light spill during the night-time construction window.
