M1 Peak Hour Diversions and Mount Ousley Night Works Continue This Thursday

Wollongong Traffic and Commute: Thursday, 26 March 2026
Commuters across Wollongong are advised to plan for ongoing traffic management and scheduled infrastructure projects affecting major arteries today. As the city handles the return of the academic year and major motorway upgrades, several key areas will see changed traffic conditions during both the morning peak and the evening commute.
Morning Peak: Wollongong Education Precinct
Transport for NSW is continuing its temporary traffic management program around the University of Wollongong (UOW) and TAFE NSW to manage high volumes of traffic. Between 7:45 am and 9:15 am this morning, motorists should be aware of the following diversions:
- M1 Motorway Exit: Drivers exiting the M1 at University Avenue will be diverted left to perform a U-turn at the eastern roundabout.
- University Detours: Access to the campus will be rerouted via Murphys Avenue and Robsons Road to reduce queueing on the motorway.
- Gwynneville/Keiraville: Motorists heading northbound on the M1 are encouraged to use the Robsons Road entry at West Wollongong rather than local exits to avoid significant delays.
Evening and Night Works: Mount Ousley Interchange
The Mount Ousley interchange project remains a major focus for road users. While the full motorway closures scheduled for earlier this week have concluded for the current cycle, regular night work is in effect tonight. Beginning at 7:00 pm and continuing until 6:00 am tomorrow morning, the following conditions will apply:
- Speed Reductions: A reduced speed limit of 60 km/h is in place through the construction zone, with some sections dropping to 40 km/h where workers are near live traffic.
- Lane Closures: Intermittent lane closures may occur on the M1 Princes Motorway between Bulli Tops and Memorial Drive.
- Picton Road: Motorists using Picton Road should watch for oversized equipment movements associated with the bridge abutment and drainage work.
Local Council Roadworks
Wollongong City Council has several active work sites this week. Drivers should expect minor delays or detours on these local roads:
- Berkeley: Roadworks on Bedford Street and footpath upgrades on Nolan Street, Gallop Street, and Winnima Way.
- Dapto: Maintenance continues on Burke Road.
- Fairy Meadow: Construction crews are active on Fairy Avenue.
- Figtree: Road resurfacing and repair work is scheduled for Garden Avenue and Whelan Avenue.
- Mount Keira: Localized traffic control on Kaloona Avenue.
Public Transport Update
Train services on the South Coast Line are currently operating on a standard weekday schedule. While no major trackwork is reported for today, students and staff at the Education Precinct are encouraged to utilize the free Wollongong Shuttle bus from North Wollongong Station to alleviate precinct congestion. Regular bus services are operating under their standard 2026 timetables with no major unplanned disruptions reported this morning.
