Monday Morning Commute Overview

Commuters across Wollongong should prepare for a mix of peak-hour diversions this morning and significant thoroughfare closures tonight. While the early morning run is expected to remain relatively smooth on the M1 Princes Motorway, specialized traffic management is active around the city’s northern education corridor. Motorists are advised to stay alert for changed speed limits and narrowed lanes as the Mount Ousley Interchange project continues major construction phases.

University and TAFE Peak Hour Diversions

Transport for NSW has confirmed that temporary traffic management is in place this morning around the University of Wollongong (UOW) and TAFE NSW. Between 7:45 am and 9:15 am, the following changes apply to manage high volumes of returning staff and students:

  • M1 Exit: Motorists exiting the M1 Motorway at University Avenue are being diverted left to perform a U-turn at the eastern roundabout.
  • Southern Detours: Access to the university is being redirected via Murphys Avenue and Robsons Road to prevent queuing on the motorway.
  • Northbound Access: Drivers heading north from Keiraville or Gwynneville are encouraged to enter the M1 at Robsons Road in West Wollongong to avoid heavy congestion near the main campus gates.

Evening Alert: Full M1 Princes Motorway Closure

The most significant disruption for today occurs tonight. A full road closure of the M1 Princes Motorway (Mount Ousley Road) and Picton Road is scheduled from 8:00 pm tonight until 4:00 am Tuesday. This closure is necessary for asphalt resurfacing and bridge work related to the new interchange.

  • M1 Closure Zone: The motorway will be closed in both directions between Bulli Tops and Memorial Drive.
  • Picton Road: Closed between the M1 interchange and Almond Street at Wilton. Eastbound traffic on Picton Road will be stopped from 7:30 pm to ensure the motorway is clear by 8:00 pm.
  • Detours: Light vehicles should use Bulli Pass or the Illawarra Highway (Macquarie Pass). Heavy vehicles exceeding 19 metres or 50.5 tonnes must delay their journey as they are restricted from using Bulli Pass.

Local Roadworks and Council Projects

Wollongong City Council has several active maintenance sites across the suburbs today. Expect minor delays or temporary parking restrictions at the following locations:

  • Berkeley: Ongoing roadworks on Bedford Street.
  • Dapto: Maintenance crews are active on Burke Road.
  • Figtree: Road and drainage work on Garden Avenue and Whelan Avenue.
  • Mount Keira: Localized roadworks on Kaloona Avenue.
  • CBD: Reminder of the permanent 50 km/h speed limit now in effect along Corrimal Street.

Public Transport Update

The South Coast Line is operating on a standard weekday timetable following the completion of weekend maintenance. However, commuters using connecting school bus services are reminded to check updated schedules for the current term. Local bus routes, including the free Gong Shuttle, remain a reliable alternative to navigating the university precinct during peak congestion times.
