Wollongong Commuter Update: Wednesday, 8 April 2026

Good morning, Wollongong. Local commuters and those travelling through the Illawarra today should prepare for specific disruptions during the morning peak and later this evening. While major through-traffic on the M1 Princes Motorway remains steady during daylight hours, significant detours are active around the city's education precinct, and heavy vehicle operators must adjust to recent infrastructure changes on the Mount Ousley descent.

Morning Peak: Education Precinct Detours

Motorists heading toward the University of Wollongong (UOW) and TAFE NSW this morning will encounter temporary traffic management designed to ease congestion during the start of the semester. Between 7:45 am and 9:15 am, the following changes are in effect:

  • Southbound traffic exiting the M1 Princes Motorway at University Avenue will be diverted left. Drivers will need to perform a U-turn at the eastern roundabout before being detoured via Murphys Avenue and Robsons Road.
  • Northbound M1 motorists using the Gwynneville exit will be detoured to the roundabout at Northfields Avenue to access Irvine Street.
  • Motorists wishing to access the M1 northbound from Keiraville or Gwynneville are strongly advised to use the Robsons Road entry at West Wollongong to avoid significant delays.

These measures are scheduled to continue through Friday, 10 April. Bus access from University Avenue into Irvine Street remains unaffected during these morning diversions.

Mount Ousley Interchange: Night Works and Safety Ramps

As the $405 million Mount Ousley Interchange project progresses toward its 2028 completion, night works are scheduled for this evening. Starting at 7:00 pm tonight, Wednesday, 8 April, construction crews will be active on the M1 Princes Motorway. Motorists should anticipate single-lane closures and reduced speed limits in both directions between the base of Mount Ousley and the top of the pass. These works are expected to wrap up by 6:00 am Thursday morning.

Heavy vehicle operators should be aware that the first of two new safety ramps is now fully operational. This 220-metre ramp is located approximately 330 metres north of the previous southern-most safety ramp, which has been permanently closed. The new ramp features a gravel arrestor bed and concrete barriers designed to safely stop B-doubles up to 26 metres in length.

Public Transport and Local Roadworks

On the rails, South Coast Line passengers are reminded to check updated timetables. Several weekday morning services that previously ran through to the Sydney CBD now terminate at Central Station, requiring a transfer for those heading to Town Hall or Martin Place. Additionally, Wollongong City Council has local resurfacing projects active across several suburbs this week. While through-traffic on major arteries like Crown Street remains clear, residential areas may see 'stop/slow' traffic control. Commuters are encouraged to allow an extra 10 to 15 minutes of travel time for cross-city trips today.
