Morning Commute Overview

Commuters across Wollongong and the Illawarra can expect a busy Tuesday on the roads as several major infrastructure projects and local council roadworks align. While the M1 Princes Motorway remains open during the peak daytime hours, significant night-time activity and reduced speed limits continue to affect travel times near the gateway to the city. Local motorists should allow an extra 10 to 15 minutes for travel through suburban hotspots, particularly in the northern and southern growth corridors.

Mount Ousley Interchange and M1 Motorway

The major upgrade of the Mount Ousley Interchange is currently in a high-activity phase. For Tuesday, March 17, the following conditions are in place:

  • Night Works: Planned construction activities will occur between 7:00 PM and 6:00 AM. Motorists travelling late this evening should prepare for lane closures and traffic control between the base of Mount Ousley and University Avenue.
  • Speed Restrictions: A permanent 60km/h speed limit remains in effect through the construction zone. Heavy vehicle movements are expected to be high as crews transport materials for the new heavy vehicle safety ramp and bridge structures.
  • UOW Access: Construction of the new northern entrance to the University of Wollongong is impacting the P5 carpark. Students and staff are advised that parking demand is high and traffic flow near the university remains constricted.

Suburban Roadworks and Local Closures

Wollongong City Council has a significant schedule of works active for the week beginning March 16. On Tuesday, March 17, delays are most likely in the following areas:

  • Dapto: Significant roadwork is underway on West Dapto Road, Wyllie Road, and Burke Road. These works are supporting the new urban release areas and may cause intermittent stop-slow conditions.
  • Northern Suburbs: In Austinmer, flood and stormwater maintenance is occurring on Railway Avenue. Further north in Coledale, Cater Street is undergoing road resurfacing, and Cokeworks Road is subject to drainage improvements.
  • Figtree and Fairy Meadow: Motorists should watch for crews on Whelan Avenue and Bellevue Road in Figtree. In Fairy Meadow, drainage works on Cabbage Tree Lane may impact access to local sporting fields.
  • Keiraville: Footpath and shared path construction on Rose Street is expected to cause minor pedestrian and vehicle diversions.

Public Transport and Rail Services

The South Coast Line is operating to a standard weekday timetable today. There are no major trackwork disruptions scheduled for the Wollongong area this Tuesday, following the completion of weekend maintenance between Waterfall and Sutherland. Commuters are encouraged to use standard connecting bus services, though local roadworks in Dapto and Figtree may cause minor delays to bus arrival times.

School Zones and Safety

As today is a standard school day, 40km/h school zones will be active from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM and 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM. High visibility police patrols are expected near major intersections and school crossings to ensure safety during the peak periods.
