Public Health Advisory: Measles Alert for Illawarra
NSW Health has issued an urgent infectious disease alert for the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District as of March 16, 2026. Following confirmed cases of measles circulating in the community, residents are advised to monitor for symptoms including fever, runny nose, sore eyes, and a cough, typically followed by a red, blotchy rash.
Wollongong Hospital’s Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) on Loftus Street has been identified as a recent exposure site. Individuals who were present at the unit on Friday, 13 March, between 12:01 am and 6:30 pm should remain vigilant for symptoms for up to 18 days. If symptoms develop, please call your GP or the emergency department ahead of your arrival to prevent further transmission in waiting rooms.
Infrastructure and Road Maintenance Schedule
Wollongong City Council has confirmed an extensive list of maintenance and infrastructure projects active for the week commencing Monday, 16 March. On Tuesday, 17 March, residents should anticipate localized traffic disruptions and noise in the following areas:
- Austinmer: Flood and stormwater mitigation works are underway on Railway Avenue.
- Coledale: Roadworks are scheduled for Cater Street, with additional flood-related projects on Cokeworks Road and near Sharkeys Beach.
- Dapto: Significant roadwork activity continues on West Dapto Road, Wyllie Road, and Burke Road.
- Figtree: Traffic and transport improvements are being conducted on Bellevue Road, alongside roadworks on Whelan Avenue.
- Wollongong CBD: Maintenance is scheduled for the Stewart Street East Carpark and Rosemont Street.
- Keiraville: Footpath and shared path upgrades are progressing on Rose Street.
Planning and Development: Public Exhibition
The Council is currently inviting community feedback on a major Planning Proposal involving a strategic review of Council-owned landholdings and select properties across the Local Government Area. The exhibition period is active today and runs until 31 March 2026. Residents can view the proposal documents at all Council libraries or the Customer Service Centre on Burelli Street. Submissions can be made via the official 'Let’s Talk' online portal or by email to the General Manager.
Additionally, public exhibition periods for several development applications remain open today, including proposals for sites at Murray Park Road in Figtree, Ajax Avenue in North Wollongong, and Soudan Street in Thirroul.

Official procurement for the Kawasaki Bridge Refurbishment project at the Wollongong Botanic Garden reaches a critical deadline today. Formal tenders for the bridge's removal, timber replacement, and restoration are scheduled to close at 10:00 am on Tuesday, 17 March.
