Public Notice: Easter Monday Services and Post-Storm Recovery Update

Easter Monday Service Operations
As Monday, 6 April 2026, is an official public holiday for Easter Monday, Wollongong City Council advises residents of several changes to standard operations. The Council’s Administrative Building on Burelli Street will be closed for the day, with staff returning to normal duties on Tuesday, 7 April. However, essential kerbside waste collection services will continue as regularly scheduled for the Monday zone. To ensure collection, residents must have their FOGO, recycling, or landfill bins placed on the kerbside before 6:00 AM. Residents are also reminded to secure bin lids with latches if available, as current coastal conditions remain breezy.
Post-Storm Clean-up and Beach Safety
Following the heavy swells and high tides experienced over the previous week, Council crews remain active across the city's foreshore areas. Intensive clean-up efforts are currently focused on Austinmer, Thirroul, and Port Kembla to remove ocean debris and safely relocate sand. While many patrolled beaches have begun to reopen for the holiday period, conditions remain subject to change. Members of the community are urged to follow all posted signage and instructions from lifeguards. Please exercise caution as sand profiles and underwater conditions have significantly shifted. The Continental Pool, which recently underwent maintenance following the storm, has resumed its standard operating hours for the remainder of the holiday break.
Public Health Advisories
NSW Health has issued a seasonal advisory for the Easter long weekend and subsequent school holiday period, urging residents to take precautions against mosquito-borne diseases. With the recent wet weather and high humidity, mosquito activity has increased across the Illawarra. Residents are encouraged to use repellent and wear long, loose-fitting clothing when outdoors at dawn and dusk. Additionally, the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) maintains an active health alert regarding measles. Community members should ensure their vaccinations are up to date and monitor for symptoms such as fever, sore eyes, and a red, blotchy rash.
Community Consultation: Safety and Planning
Wollongong City Council is currently inviting public feedback on the Draft Community Safety Plan 2026-2031. This strategic document outlines a five-year roadmap for enhancing public lighting, increasing CCTV coverage, and improving the activation of public spaces to reduce antisocial behavior. The exhibition period remains open until 30 April 2026. Furthermore, a notification has been issued for a public hearing scheduled later this month regarding the reclassification of various council-owned landholdings from 'Community' to 'Operational' status. Residents wishing to participate in the hearing on 21 April must register their interest with the Land Use Planning Team by Friday, 17 April.
