Infrastructure and Development Tenders

Wollongong City Council has issued a final reminder regarding the tender for the Ocean Park Woonona Sportsfield Lighting project. All formal submissions for the design and construction of upgraded sportsfield lighting—including new light poles, towers, and infrastructure adjustments—must be lodged by 10:00 am today, Wednesday, 21 January 2026. This project is part of a broader commitment to modernizing local athletic facilities and enhancing safety for evening sports participants.

Beach Safety and Environmental Health Advisory

Following recent extreme weather events and a serious shark incident involving a 27-year-old Wollongong surfer at Manly Beach earlier this week, authorities are urging local residents to exercise heightened caution at all Illawarra waterways. While Wollongong beaches currently remain open, the recent heavy rainfall has significantly increased the risk of shark activity and poor water quality due to debris and runoff. Public health officials advise the following:

  • Avoid swimming or surfing at dawn, dusk, or after heavy rainfall when water is murky.
  • Always swim at patrolled beaches between the red and yellow flags.
  • Be mindful of changed coastal conditions as clean-up efforts continue following last weekend’s storms.

The New South Wales State Emergency Service (SES) remains active in the region as they finalize property repairs and tree removals following over 200 millimeters of rain recorded in parts of the South Coast and Illawarra.

Community Events and Youth Services

Residents are invited to participate in today's Garden Discovery Buggy Tour at the Wollongong Botanic Garden. This guided tour offers an accessible way for visitors to explore the seasonal highlights of the gardens. Additionally, the Hive Festival continues today at the Wollongong Art Gallery, featuring several interactive workshops including 'Plushie Pals' and the 'Sweep It Out The Door' creative sessions. Looking ahead, Wollongong Youth Services will host an Open Day at the Burelli Street center tomorrow, Thursday, 22 January, from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm, providing information on local support networks and vocational programs.

Ongoing Projects and Compliance Trials

Council is moving into the next phase of the North Wollongong Beach Seawall project, with Stage 2 construction scheduled to begin in late February. Residents should note that while the pavilion will remain accessible through modified arrangements, the café and kiosk will be closed during the works. Furthermore, a 12-month trial of a mobile camera enforcement system is now underway to monitor timed parking compliance in high-traffic zones, ensuring equitable access to parking spots across the city center.
