Official City Roundup: Saturday, 4 April 2026

Stay informed with the latest official notices from Wollongong City Council and NSW Health. This week’s updates include a critical health advisory, significant traffic changes around the education precinct, and progress on major regional infrastructure projects.

Public Health Advisory: Measles Alert

The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) has issued an urgent public health alert following a confirmed case of measles in the region. Residents who visited Wollongong Hospital or retail locations in Albion Park during late March are urged to monitor for symptoms, which include fever, sore eyes, and a cough followed by a red blotchy rash. NSW Health advises that anyone born during or after 1966 should ensure they have received two doses of the MMR vaccine. If symptoms develop, please call ahead before visiting your GP or emergency department to prevent further transmission.

Traffic and Transport: Education Precinct Changes

Transport for NSW is continuing temporary traffic management measures around the University of Wollongong (UOW) and TAFE NSW campuses to manage peak-period congestion. These changes remain active through Friday, 10 April 2026. Motorists exiting the M1 Motorway at University Avenue will be diverted to make a U-turn at the eastern roundabout. Access to the M1 northbound is recommended via the Robsons Road entry in West Wollongong. Local residents may experience increased traffic on Murphys Avenue and Robsons Road during weekday morning peaks.

Major Projects: Mount Ousley Interchange

Work is progressing on the $405 million Mount Ousley Interchange. Following the successful opening of the new 220-metre heavy vehicle safety ramp earlier this week, crews are now focusing on bridge deck construction and the installation of pre-cast concrete girders. Commuters are advised to stay alert for night-time lane closures and changed conditions on the M1 Motorway as drainage and gantry installation works continue. The project remains on track for its scheduled completion in 2028.

Local Works and Planning Notices

Wollongong City Council has several essential maintenance projects and planning exhibitions active this weekend:

  • Roadworks: Maintenance and asphalt works are scheduled for the Princes Highway at Fairy Meadow, Whelan Avenue in Figtree, and Kaloona Avenue at Mount Keira.
  • Stormwater Upgrades: Flood mitigation works continue at Railway Avenue in Austinmer and Brokers Road in Mount Pleasant.
  • Development Applications: DAs currently on exhibition include a significant proposal for the Princes Highway in Corrimal (DA-2026/167) and Kembla Street in Wollongong (DA-2026/128). Public submissions for these applications are open until late April.
  • Public Hearing: Residents are invited to register by 17 April for a public hearing regarding the reclassification of Council-owned land across various suburbs, including Berkeley and Dapto.

Community Reminders

Council reminds residents that new public kerbside EV chargers are now operational on Council land to support the growing number of electric vehicle users. Additionally, the official School Holiday Guide is now available, featuring free family activities across Wollongong libraries and community centres.
