Community Safety and Strategic Planning

Wollongong City Council has officially placed the draft Community Safety Plan 2026–2031 on public exhibition. Following Council endorsement on March 23, the community is invited to review and provide feedback on this five-year roadmap aimed at enhancing wellbeing and reducing antisocial behavior. The plan prioritizes improved public lighting, mental health support services, and the activation of public spaces to foster a safer environment for all residents. This notice remains active for public comment through the end of the month.

Additionally, Council is seeking feedback on the Planning Proposal for the Review of Council Landholdings. This strategic review affects various properties currently zoned for low and medium-density residential use. Public exhibition for this proposal remains open until March 31, 2026. Residents can view relevant documents at all local libraries or the Council’s Customer Service Centre on Burelli Street.

Health Advisories and Public Safety

The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) maintains an active health alert regarding measles. Residents are urged to monitor for symptoms such as fever, sore eyes, and a cough, followed by a red, blotchy rash. This alert follows recent notifications within the district and emphasizes the importance of ensuring vaccinations are up to date.

Furthermore, a Safety Notice (Amber) has been issued by NSW Health regarding GE Healthcare resuscitaire beds (infant warmers). Issued on March 24, 2026, this notice requires local health services to conduct risk assessments regarding potential device issues. Parents and caregivers at local facilities are advised that clinical staff are aware of the advisory and are taking necessary precautions to ensure patient safety.

Local Maintenance and Roadwork Schedule

For the week beginning March 23, 2026, the following infrastructure and maintenance works are active across the Wollongong LGA. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to exercise caution in these areas:

  • Roadworks: Active sites include Bedford Street in Berkeley, Burke Road in Dapto, and Fairy Avenue in Fairy Meadow. Paving and maintenance are also scheduled for Garden Avenue and Whelan Avenue in Figtree, and Kaloona Avenue in Mount Keira.
  • Flood and Stormwater: Crews are performing drainage upgrades and flood mitigation at Railway Avenue in Austinmer, Cabbage Tree Lane in Fairy Meadow, and Branch Avenue in Figtree.
  • Footpaths and Amenities: Footpath construction is underway on Nolan and Gallop Streets in Berkeley and Hospital Road in Bulli. Additionally, maintenance works continue at the Bellambi Rock Pool.

Council also confirms the finalization of the Warrawong Parklands Master Plan, signaling upcoming enhancements to local recreation spaces. Residents should stay tuned for further updates regarding the commencement of specific parkland upgrades.
