NSW Health Alert: Measles Vigilance Required

NSW Health has issued an urgent advisory for the Wollongong area following the confirmation of three new measles cases as of late March 2026. Health officials have determined that these infections were acquired locally, with exposure sites identified across Fairy Meadow, North Wollongong, Gwynneville, Wollongong, and Warrawong. Specific attention is directed toward the Wollongong Hospital Medical Assessment Unit, which remains a site of interest for potential exposures occurring through to 31 March 2026.

Residents are urged to monitor for symptoms including fever, sore eyes, a runny nose, and a cough. These initial signs are typically followed by a red, blotchy rash that begins on the head and spreads downward. Those who are pregnant, immunocompromised, or have infants and believe they may have been exposed are advised to contact their local Public Health Unit immediately. Health officials remind the public to call ahead before visiting a GP or emergency department to prevent further transmission in waiting rooms.

Hazardous Surf and Wind Warning

Police and Marine Area Command have issued a high-priority safety warning for the Illawarra coastline effective for Sunday, 29 March 2026. The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast hazardous surf conditions characterized by unpredictable swells and damaging winds. Authorities are strongly advising the community to avoid all water-based activities, including rock fishing, boating, and swimming. Rock platforms and ocean-exposed locations are considered high-risk zones. Residents are encouraged to delay any maritime plans until conditions stabilize.

City-Wide Park Maintenance Blitz

Wollongong City Council has initiated an intensive maintenance program across the local government area to manage significant grass growth. Acting Parks and Open Space Manager Josh Saunders noted that current weather patterns, involving high humidity and warm soil temperatures, have created peak growing conditions. Maintenance crews are prioritized for high-use areas in suburbs including Helensburgh, Coledale, Thirroul, Woonona, Lake Heights, Berkeley, Windang, Primbee, West Dapto, and Unanderra.

Council requests community patience as mowing schedules are subject to ground conditions; heavy machinery cannot be operated on soft or waterlogged surfaces to prevent turf damage. Efforts remain focused on over 140 playgrounds and various sporting fields to ensure community spaces remain accessible and safe.

Facility Updates and Public Exhibition

  • Whyte’s Gully Revolve Centre: The Revolve Centre is currently closed for safety and accessibility upgrades, with a reopening target of August 2026. However, the Community Recycling Centre (CRC) remains open for the disposal of e-waste, household chemicals, motor oil, and cardboard.
  • Community Safety Plan: The Draft Community Safety Plan 2026–2031 is now on public exhibition. The plan outlines strategies for reducing antisocial behavior and enhancing lighting in public spaces. Residents are invited to review the document and provide feedback to help shape local safety priorities.
  • Infrastructure Works: Ongoing flood mitigation and drainage upgrades continue this week at Ursula Road in Bulli and Railway Avenue in Austinmer. Motorists should expect minor delays near active roadwork sites in Figtree and Berkeley.
