Official Notice: Extreme Heat Warning for the Long Weekend

Authorities have issued a health advisory for Wollongong and the broader Illawarra region as a period of prolonged and intense heat is forecast to sweep through southern New South Wales. Starting Saturday, 24 January 2026, temperatures are expected to rise significantly as a 'heat engine' moves across the state. Residents are urged to take proactive measures to manage heat-related risks during this long weekend. Health officials recommend staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activities during the peak of the day, and checking on vulnerable neighbors, including the elderly and those living alone. The heat is expected to persist until at least next Wednesday.

NSW Health: Measles Alert and Community Surveillance

NSW Health has released a public health alert following the confirmation of several measles cases across the state, including instances involving travellers returning from South-East Asia. While many exposure sites are located within the Sydney metropolitan area, Wollongong residents who have recently travelled or visited transport hubs are advised to monitor for symptoms. Symptoms include fever, sore eyes, and a cough, typically followed by a red, blotchy rash. If symptoms develop, residents should contact their GP or local emergency department in advance to ensure appropriate infection control measures are in place.

Infrastructure and Planning: $17 Million Precinct Investment

In a significant milestone for the city, Wollongong City Council has welcomed a $17 million investment from the NSW Government to progress the next stage of planning for a world-class sports and entertainment precinct. This funding will facilitate architectural designs, heritage impact statements, and traffic reports for a proposed 9,500-capacity entertainment centre and a revamped WIN Stadium. Lord Mayor Tania Brown stated that this investment is crucial for unlocking the potential of the ocean-side venue as a year-round destination for major events.

Development Applications Currently on Exhibition

Wollongong City Council wishes to notify the public of several Development Applications (DAs) currently open for community feedback. Notable applications include:

  • DA-2026/15: Proposed works at Bellambi Lane, Bellambi (Exhibition ends 18 Feb 2026).
