Local Traffic Committee Convenes for March Session

The City of Wollongong Traffic Committee is scheduled to meet today, Tuesday, 24 March 2026, to address a range of local transport and infrastructure matters. The committee, which includes representatives from Wollongong City Council, Transport for NSW, and the NSW Police, is responsible for making technical recommendations on traffic-related issues, road safety initiatives, and proposed road closures across the region.

While the committee does not have the authority to implement changes directly, its recommendations are vital for the formal approval process. Key items on today's agenda are expected to include the review of temporary road closures for upcoming community events and the assessment of new signage and parking regulations in high-growth areas. Following today's session, the committee’s findings will be forwarded to the General Manager for sign-off and subsequently presented at the next Ordinary Meeting of Council for final endorsement.

Council Finalises Masterplan for Warrawong Parklands

Following a significant session late yesterday, Wollongong Lord Mayor Councillor Tania Brown has welcomed the finalisation of the Warrawong Parklands Masterplan. The 32-hectare site near Lake Illawarra and Kully Bay is set for a major transformation aimed at balancing community recreation with environmental preservation.

"The Warrawong Parklands site is an important one for our community and has, to date, been an underutilised open space in our city," Lord Mayor Brown stated. She emphasised that the new plan would protect vital ecosystems and riparian vegetation while significantly improving the area’s recreation and amenity. The masterplan is the result of extensive collaboration between the Council and the NSW Government, following a public consultation period that concluded late last year.

Upcoming Public Exhibition of Community Safety Plan

In addition to the parkland vision, the Council has confirmed that the draft Wollongong Community Safety Plan 2026–2031 will go on public exhibition starting tomorrow, Wednesday, 25 March. The plan outlines a five-year strategy focusing on crime prevention through environmental design, enhanced CCTV coverage, and improved public lighting.

The draft plan is the sixth iteration of the city's safety framework and incorporates feedback from local residents and crime data analysis. Key components of the proposal include:

  • Expansion of the "Safer Cities: Her Way" program to improve safety perceptions for women and gender-diverse individuals.
  • New initiatives for community education on digital safety and scam prevention.
  • Continued partnerships with NSW Police to address emerging crime trends.

Residents are encouraged to review the documents and provide feedback during the exhibition period, which runs until 30 April 2026. The final plan is expected to be submitted for formal adoption in June.
