University Avenue Diversions and Mount Ousley Works Impact Friday Commute

Friday Traffic Overview for Wollongong
Commuters heading into the Wollongong CBD and the University precinct this morning, Friday, 13 March 2026, should prepare for established detours and construction-related delays. As the semester continues, Transport for NSW has maintained peak-hour traffic changes to manage the high volume of students and staff returning to the region. Major arterial routes, particularly the M1 Princes Motorway and Mount Ousley Road, remain under heavy surveillance due to ongoing interchange construction.
Education Precinct Peak-Hour Diversions
Transport for NSW has advised that temporary traffic changes remain in effect around the University of Wollongong and TAFE NSW. Between 7:45 am and 9:15 am today, motorists should expect the following:
- Southbound traffic exiting the M1 Princes Motorway at University Avenue will be diverted left to perform a U-turn at the eastern roundabout.
- University-bound motorists will then be detoured via the western access route through Murphys Avenue and Robsons Road.
- Drivers wishing to access the M1 Northbound from Keiraville or Gwynneville are urged to use the Robsons Road entry at West Wollongong to bypass congestion at the University Avenue interchange.
While bus access from University Avenue into Irvine Street remains unaffected, general motorists are advised to allow at least 10 to 15 minutes of additional travel time during this morning window.
Mount Ousley Interchange Construction
Work on the Mount Ousley interchange project is ramping up. While standard work hours are set from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, commuters will notice a significant increase in heavy vehicle movements. Truck movements transporting soil and materials are expected between work sites on both sides of the M1 Princes Motorway via University Avenue. Motorists should be wary of shifting temporary barriers and new line markings near the base of Mount Ousley Road and Dumfries Avenue. Speed limits remain reduced in these active work zones for the safety of both workers and drivers.
Local Roadworks and Maintenance
Wollongong City Council has several local road maintenance projects active today. Traffic control and 'stop/slow' arrangements may be encountered at the following locations:
- Fairy Meadow: Maintenance continues on Dymock Street and Helen Brae Avenue.
- Keiraville: Resurfacing work is scheduled for Eastern Street and Pooraka Avenue.
- Dapto: Roadworks are progressing on Burke Road.
- Berkeley: Patching and repairs are underway on Salisbury Street.
Public Transport and Rail Update
The South Coast Line is currently operating on a standard Friday schedule with no major unplanned disruptions reported. However, commuters planning for the weekend should be aware that trackwork is scheduled for Saturday, 14 March, which will see buses replace trains between Dapto, Port Kembla, and Sutherland. For today, rail services remain the most reliable option for avoiding motorway congestion.
