Morning Peak Shifts at the Wollongong Education Precinct

Commuters heading toward the University of Wollongong (UOW) and TAFE NSW this morning, Tuesday, 10 March 2026, should prepare for continued temporary traffic management measures. To manage the influx of students and staff during the early semester, Transport for NSW has implemented weekday diversions between 7:45 AM and 9:15 AM. These changes are designed to reduce the heavy congestion typically seen at the University Avenue motorway exit.

  • M1 Southbound Exit: Motorists exiting the M1 Princes Motorway at University Avenue will be diverted left to perform a U-turn at the eastern roundabout.
  • Campus Access: University-bound drivers will then be detoured via a western access route involving Murphys Avenue and Robsons Road.
  • Northbound Entry: Drivers looking to join the M1 Northbound from Keiraville or Gwynneville are advised to use the Robsons Road entry in West Wollongong to avoid significant delays at the main interchange.

Mount Ousley Interchange Night Works

As part of the ongoing Mount Ousley Interchange project, night works are scheduled to continue this evening. Construction activities are occurring between 7:00 PM and 6:00 AM, Monday through Thursday, throughout March. While major full road closures are reserved for later in the month, motorists travelling late tonight should expect lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 60 km/h through the work zone at the base of Mount Ousley.

Construction teams are currently focused on earthworks, utility relocations, and the installation of temporary barriers. Be aware of increased truck movements and oversized equipment shifts between work sites on both sides of the M1 Princes Motorway. Always follow the directions of traffic controllers and electronic message signs.

Public Transport and Parking Alerts

The old commuter car park accessed from Mount Ousley Road is now permanently closed to allow for the next stage of interchange construction. A new car park is currently being built on the western side of the interchange, but in the interim, parking capacity near the university is limited. Commuters are strongly encouraged to utilize the following public transport options:

  • The Gong Shuttle: Routes 55A and 55C continue to operate every 10 minutes, connecting the CBD, North Wollongong Station, and the University.
  • North Gong (NG) Shuttle: This dedicated service runs between North Wollongong Station and the UOW campus from 7:50 AM until 10:00 PM on weekdays.
  • Train Services: The South Coast Line is currently operating on a standard weekday timetable with no major trackwork reported for the Wollongong area today.

Local Road Maintenance

Wollongong City Council is also conducting routine road resurfacing and maintenance on several local streets this week. While these works are typically managed with 'stop/slow' traffic control, they may cause minor localized delays in residential areas. Residents are reminded to check for letterbox notifications if work is scheduled for their specific street.
