Official Notice: Post-Australia Day Service Schedule

Following the Australia Day public holiday on Monday, 26 January, Wollongong City Council confirms that regular administrative services and customer service centers will resume standard operating hours on Tuesday, 27 January 2026. While most community celebrations concluded on Monday night with the fireworks display at Wollongong Harbour, residents are advised that cleanup crews will be active across Osborne Park, Belmore Basin, and Flagstaff Hill throughout the day. Please exercise caution when walking or driving near these areas while maintenance vehicles are in operation.

Public Health Advisory: Statewide Measles Alert

NSW Health has issued an urgent public health alert for all residents following the confirmation of new measles cases. While the primary exposure sites are currently located in Sydney, the high volume of travel between the Illawarra and Sydney over the long weekend has prompted local health authorities to urge vigilance. Residents should monitor for symptoms, which include:

  • High fever and sore eyes.
  • A cough and runny nose.
  • A red, blotchy rash spreading from the head to the rest of the body.

If you suspect you have symptoms, please call ahead to your GP or local emergency department to ensure you are isolated upon arrival, preventing further spread to vulnerable patients.

Beach Safety and Shark Surveillance

In response to a string of recent shark incidents across NSW, the state government has implemented a $4.2 million boost to beach safety. For Tuesday, 27 January, swimmers at Wollongong’s 17 patrolled beaches can expect increased drone surveillance. These drones provide real-time monitoring and early warnings to lifeguards. Residents are reminded to only swim between the red and yellow flags. North Wollongong Beach remains patrolled year-round, while other local beaches are patrolled daily from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm during the current summer season.

Infrastructure and Roadwork Updates

Planned maintenance and infrastructure projects continue this week. Motorists should anticipate minor delays and localized traffic management at the following sites:

  • Avondale: Roadworks on Avondale Road.
  • Corrimal: Maintenance on Eager Street.
  • Dapto: Ongoing traffic and transport works at the intersection of Cleveland Road and Fowlers Road.
  • Fairy Meadow: Road improvements on Helen Brae Avenue and Garratt Avenue.
  • Wollongong CBD: Footpath and road upgrades on Denison Street and Keira Street.

Waste Services and Facility Closures

Wollongong Waste has confirmed that The Revolve Centre remains temporarily closed for essential works until further notice. Residents looking to dispose of bulky items are encouraged to use the Community Recycling Centre (CRC) or book a scheduled household cleanup. Regular bin collections will proceed as scheduled for Tuesday; however, residents are asked to ensure bins are placed at the kerbside by 6:00 am to account for any holiday-related route adjustments.

Development and Planning Notices

Public exhibition continues for several local projects. Notably, the Development Application for Hayes Lane in Huntley (DA-2025/864) is nearing its closing date for submissions on 29 January 2026. Interested parties can view the full details of active applications via the Council’s online portal.
