Official City Roundup: Thursday, 12 March 2026

Wollongong City Council and regional health authorities have issued several notices for Thursday, 12 March 2026, regarding essential infrastructure maintenance, public health warnings, and planning exhibitions currently open for community feedback. Residents are encouraged to review the following updates to ensure they are informed of changes occurring across the local government area.

Infrastructure and Sporting Facility Upgrades

Maintenance and upgrade works are currently active at several key sites. Notably, a significant lighting upgrade has commenced this week at Ray Robinson Oval in Towradgi. The project involves the installation of five new lighting poles to replace aged infrastructure, aimed at improving evening accessibility for the local football community, including the Fernhill Football Club and Fernhill Falcons. Residents should expect construction activity and minor equipment movement around the oval for the next two months.

In the Wollongong City Centre, preliminary site preparations are underway at MacCabe Park. While the demolition of Pioneer Hall is scheduled for May, visitors to the eastern edge of the park will notice increased site assessments and signage as part of the park's long-term master plan to create a vibrant "green heart" for the city.

Public Health Advisories

NSW Health maintains an active health alert for the Illawarra Shoalhaven district. Community members are advised to remain vigilant regarding the following:

  • Measles Alert: Following identified exposure sites in the region, residents should monitor for symptoms such as fever, sore eyes, and a blotchy rash. Those who are not fully vaccinated are urged to consult their healthcare provider.
  • Buruli Ulcer Warning: A public health warning remains in effect for south-east New South Wales. This bacterial infection is linked to mosquito bites. Health authorities recommend using repellent and wearing long-sleeved clothing during dawn and dusk to minimize risk.

Planning and Development Exhibitions

Several major development applications (DAs) are currently on public exhibition. The following deadlines for formal submissions are approaching:

  • Corrimal Cokeworks (DA-2023/840): The exhibition for this major urban renewal project on Railway Street remains open until 18 March 2026.
  • Figtree (DA-2026/120): Proposals for Murray Park Road are open for comment until 8 April 2026.
  • North Wollongong (DA-2026/102): Planning documents for Ajax Avenue are available for review until 8 April 2026.
  • Thirroul (DA-2026/112): The exhibition for Soudan Street remains active through 8 April 2026.

Community Services Update

The recently refurbished Helensburgh Pool is now fully operational and following its standard seasonal schedule. Additionally, the expanded Emergency Short Stay Area at Wollongong Hospital is now at full capacity, providing improved patient flow for semi-urgent conditions. Residents seeking non-emergency medical advice are reminded to utilize Healthdirect services to alleviate pressure on hospital emergency departments.
